2nd Street Couplet

On Wednesday August 26th, 2009, the first Public workshop was held presenting the 2nd Street Couplet Proposal to the public. This project consists of converting 2nd St. to a one-way east bound roadway from Broadway to Flume St., and also 1st St. to one-way west bound traffic from Flume to Broadway. It also includes a possible round-a-bout at Flume St. and 2nd St. and also minor traffic signal modifications to signals on 2nd St, which will allow better traffic progression. Some of the key benefits include approximately 45-50 diagonal parking spaces along 2nd and 1st St. as well as pedestrian safety improvements by the use of corner bulbing and Bike lanes on 2nd St. The one-way couplet proposal also removes the significant vehicle delays during peak hours on 2nd St. at Main and Broadway and minimizes pedestrian and vehicle conflicts by reducing vehicles to one-way traffic. Ultimately, Bike connectivity will be complete through downtown Chico connecting to the future Annie's Glen Project. This project proposal has gained a considerable amount of public and local business support from all involved. Staff is planning to agendize this project with the Internal Affairs committee in the coming months.
